8 Winter Skin Tips to Keep Your Skin Healthy While Traveling

by

We realize Southwest Florida does not get particularly chilly even in the winter months, but if you’re headed up North for the holidays, you may want to prepare your skin. It doesn’t take long for cooler weather to impact your skin, which often causes dryness, flakiness and irritation. Check out our winter skin tips below to keep your best face forward this holiday season.

  1. Find an oil-based moisturizer.

Finding a moisturizer that oil-based rather than water-based will help combat dry skin. But choose your oils wisely. Avocado oil, primrose oil, mineral oil and almond oil are all good options for moisturizing that won’t clog the pores.

  1. Use sunscreen.

Just because the air is cooler doesn’t mean the sun is not out. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on both your hands and face before going outdoors.

  1. Wear gloves.

Because the skin on your hands is thin and has fewer oil glands than the rest of your body, it’s easy for hands to become very dry and crack. Protect them by wearing gloves .

  1. Moisturize your Feet.

Just like your hands, your feet require extra attention in the winter months. Look for lotions that contain petroleum jelly and exfoliate your feet regularly.

  1. Invest in a humidifier.

When the heaters come on, it tends to make our skin extremely dry. Buy a humidifier to release more moisture into the air during the cooler months.

  1. Change your facial products with the weather.

Do you regularly use clay masks, toners, or harsh peels? When your skin is already dry, make sure to use toners with no alcohol, mild foaming cleansers and hydrating-cream masks rather than clay masks.

  1. Avoid the blow-dryer when possible.

Hot air tends to dry out the scalp, so avoid the blow-dryer if you’re prone to an itchy or flaky scalp. Air dry your hair, or go with a tousled look for the cooler months.

  1. Load up on omega-3s.

Load up on foods that boost hydration, like salmon or walnuts, or take omega-3s supplements to ensure you’re getting an extra dose for the winter months.
